VA Primary Care Providers (PCPs) manage a complex panel of patients, providing comprehensive medical care, emphasizing health promotion, disease prevention and chronic disease management. Primary care clinics use a medical home model called Patient Aligned Care Teams. The team includes a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse or health technician, and administrative assistant. Most practices have registered dieticians, clinical pharmacists, social workers, and mental health providers within the practice. PCPs provide general and gender-specific care to both men and women Veterans that range in age from 18 through the geriatric years. The physician serves as collaborating physician for nurse practitioner/physician assistants. Panel sizes for full-time physicians are approximately 1200 patients, and appointment times are typically 30 minutes for established patients and 60 minutes for new patients. There is no evening or weekend call. Some clinics have Saturday morning hours which are staffed by a rotation.
The VA Boston Healthcare System offers teaching opportunities for both medical students and medical residents in the inpatient and outpatient arenas. Two practices (West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain) have resident and medical student teaching opportunities. As a member of the VA Boston Healthcare System and Department of Medicine, a faculty appointment at an appropriate rank is expected. A Massachusetts license is expected by the employment start date.
If selected as a float physician the physician will travel to any VA Boston Primary Care location to cover other provider's panels, see new patients, and see same-day sick visits. This may occur at any of the 3 main campuses (Brockton, Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury) or at one of the 5 Community Based Outpatient Clinics (Causeway Street in Boston, Framingham, Lowell, Plymouth, or Quincy.) The float physician would provide care for both male and female patients, and would be required to be proficient in gender-specific care such as pelvic exams, pap smears, and contraception counseling and prescribing.
The VA utilizes a national electronic medical record and is known for delivering high quality, evidence based care within a culture of continuous improvement.
