The Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center (RHJ VAMC) seeks to recruit a Staff Physician in Gastroenterology / Hepatology, with a focus on Hepatology. The physician chosen will be part of a team making decisions in the management, growth, and future direction of the Section of Gastroenterology / Hepatology at our growing 1A VAMC facility. This physician will build on the existing significant strengths and commitment to service excellence, high quality Veteran care, education, and scholarly endeavors in an environment that underscores a respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Responsibilities will include promoting and conducting high-quality patient-centric clinical care, mentoring trainees and, if appropriate, junior faculty, developing an outstanding educational experience for learners of all levels. Administrative and quality improvement opportunities are available for interested applicants. A robust ACGME-accredited fellowship training program in gastroenterology / hepatology provides ample teaching opportunities. The RHJ VAMC has strong funded programs in health services research, health care disparities, clinical trials, and basic science. Collaboration with Gastroenterology / Hepatology faculty or other investigators at the RHJ VAMC or MUSC is encouraged. Protected time for clinical or basic research can be supported based on interest, previous work, and funding. Junior faculty interested in building an academic career are strongly encouraged to apply. The Staff Physician will report to the Gastroenterology / Hepatology Section under the Medicine Service at the VAMC and will ideally also qualify for a potential academic appointment at MUSC. Additional clinical, teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities at MUSC are possible. Duties: Clinical duties will include diagnosing, treating and managing patients referred for management of Liver and GI disorders, including fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis and pre/postcare of liver transplant patients. Performs endoscopic procedures and cares for patients in the outpatient clinic and inpatient setting, sometimes supervising trainees (GI fellows or medicine residents). Procedural duties will include performing diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy procedures (including PEG placement, esophageal dilation, and other basic therapeutics), liver biopsy and paracentesis. Competence in ultrasound elastography is a plus, but not required Performing histories and physical examinations, endoscopy consultations, virtual visits (telehealth) and developing treatment and followup plans. Responsible for completing patient encounters, inpatient consults, notes, and correctly coding visits in accordance with coding guidelines.
