The Department of Surgery at Duke University Medical Center is seeking candidates for the position of Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Candidates must hold the academic rank of Professor or Associate Professor and have board certification in colon and rectal surgery, with completion of a colon and rectal surgery fellowship. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognized leader with an outstanding record of clinical excellence, research achievement, educational accomplishment, and mentorship. Highly desirable attributes include involvement in national committees or professional societies, prior experience in recruitment and retention of faculty, and development of clinical programs. This is an excellent opportunity to develop and guide a strategic vision for a new Division within a world class health system that is experiencing significant clinical growth.
Key components of the Chief?s role:
Providing strategic vision and leadership to the Division.
Fostering an environment of innovation, scholarship, and collaboration.
Oversee the recruitment, retention, and mentorship of faculty, staff, and trainees, while advancing Duke?s core values.
Cultivating the Division?s research portfolio, supporting basic science, translational, and clinical research, and encouraging cross-disciplinary collaborations within and beyond the Department of Surgery.
Oversee the continued growth of educational programs for medical students and residents, and the development of a colon and rectal surgery fellowship bringing Duke to the forefront of training the next generation of leaders in colon and rectal surgery.
There is an anticipated need to recruit 3-5 new colorectal surgeons in the next 3-5 years.

The colon and rectal surgery staff at Duke are comprised of 6 faculty members with a range of years in practice and 6 APPs, all highly skilled with expertise in all colon and rectal surgical diseases.
We provide care across 4 surgical hospitals (Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, and the Durham VA) with a high volume of complex open and MIS abdominal surgery. There is room for expansion into endoscopy, benign anorectal, and pelvic floor practices.
The Duke Cancer Institute, Duke Regional, and Duke Raleigh centers provide comprehensive cancer multidisciplinary clinics and research opportunities.
The Duke Health network provides collaborative care across surgical disciplines (e.g., hepatic pancreaticobiliary, urology, gynecology, advanced abdominal wall reconstruction, orthopedic oncology, etc.) as well as highly specialized operative adjuncts (e.g., intra-operative radiation therapy, advanced gastrointestinal procedures).
